2019 in Review

How is it the end of 2019 already? I had so many plans, so many things to do. Don’t get me wrong, I did a lot. But I’ve also had curtains stashed under my dresser since the start of 2019 and I’ve been “meaning to put them up ever since.”

Lucky for all of you, we’ve managed to be a little more productive with our MUFF. Have we taken over the world yet? Nope. Each year I say to myself, “this will be the year for world domination,” and then I remember that I have a full-time job, the rest of the team has full-time jobs and this right here is a labour of love. A thing we do when we’ve got the time. And there is no shame in that and there’s no shame in getting a goodnight’s sleep either! (Anyone who tells you that you’ll only be successful if you push and hustle until you want to die is not a friend. Take time off. Sleep. Do you.)

I’m wildly impressed at all we accomplished this year, especially given how damn busy we were with the rest of our lives. Oh, what’s that? Do you hear that sound? Why… it’s the sound of a recapppppppp!!!!!!!!

In 2019 we:

  • Partnered with 9 festivals/events including Christie Pits Film Festival, Breakthroughs Film Festival, and Regent Park Film Festival

  • Plus highlighted even more like JAYU, Stareable Fest, and Pendance

  • Gave away piles (piles!) of free tickets to films like A Woman’s Work, Viva Varda, Miss Misery, Booksmart, and Queen & Slim

  • Published 30 pieces on the MUFF Blog, including starting off the year with Karyn Kusama (Destroyer) and ending it with Kathleen Hepburn and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers (The Body Remembers When The World Broke Open)

  • And of our 29 interviews, we featured 11 women of colour (or 39%…which we acknowledge is not the best)

All in all it was a pretty good year.

Our goals for 2020 are to be to be more active with our online community so it can keep growing, interview more women of colour, continue partnering with all of the great Toronto-based festivals and events that are also doing their part to promote women and marginalized people in film/TV, and drink more water.

Thank you to everyone who helped support us in 2019. And a personal thank you from me to Seana, my MUFF partner-in-crime for her insane contributions to the MUFF Blog (I dunno how she does it) and our newest team member Augusta for her brilliant newsletters. Here’s to 2020!
