MUFFDates: Spring 2017!

MUFFDates: Spring 2017!

It doesn't feel like it, but spring is around the corner! Maybe. Probably. Orrrrr we could be stuck in eternal winter. But, hey, that's even more reason to spend it inside at the movies with us. And we've got you covered this spring, whether it's an incredibly topical documentary, stoner comedy, or discussion about women and mental health. Also, it has to be said: what an incredibly weird and sort of awkward banner image to make. Erp.

Get out your pens (or apps) and mark your calendars with our spring dates below! (And obviously your calendars are already marked for our next screening on February 22nd, Reel Girl Talk: Dear White People. Obviously.)

HER-Story: Migrant Dreams - Wednesday, March 15th

"When we act out of fear we shut down the possibility to imagine what our societies can be like. We shut down dreaming about a more just and equitable society. When we see the migrant workers resisting the way they are in this documentary, we see that we can ask for more. More is possible — another world is possible." - Min Sook Lee (director, MIGRANT DREAMS).

For our second HER-STory, we couldn’t be more excited to share two incredible documentaries with you: Migrant Dreams (dir Min Sook Lee) and short film Constant Refugee (dir. Leila Almawy and P.C. Barefoot). The March series focuses on migrant and refugee cinema. Min Sook Lee and Leila Almawy will be with us at the screening to talk about the stories they have captured on film and WHY these stories are so relevant and important for us as Canadians and participants in the global world. You can RSVP on Facebook here!

Half Baked - Wednesday, April 12th

We decided that it was a sign from the heavens that our spring MUFFxTO screening happened to be in April. We tried really hard to make it happen on April 20th (hehe) but the 12th was as close as we could get. Regardless of month and date, this Tamra Davis classic deserves to be celebrated on the big screen. So grab some sour cream and onion chips with some dip, beef jerky and also ice cream bars, popcorn, red popcorn, graham crackers, graham crackers with marshmallows and you know what, grab some celery, grape jelly, Cap'n Crunch with the little Crunch berries, pizzas and a whole lot of water and join us for Half Baked

Reel Girl Talk: Girl, Interrupted - Wednesday, May 17th

We are incredibly pleased to be returning with Reel Girl Talk to tackle mental health and how, we as women, identify with it. And what better film to screen than Girl, Interrupted, right? This intense film starred Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie...oh and also Brittany Murphy, Clea DuVall, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Moss and Vanessa Redgrave. Girl fucking power right there. There's a lot to unpack when it comes to how we perceive our mental health, particularly in a world that wants to shrug us off as hysterical or shrill or whiny. The headline of the original NY Times review ("Get Over It, Little Girl. Stop Your Whining") is proof enough that.

So how's that for an incredibly interesting and diverse spring line-up? We hope to see you at them all!
