Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Who doesnʼt dream of working at a high-end fashion magazine? The clothing, the shoes, the trips to Paris; it seems like a job a million people would kill for. Well, thatʼs not what Andrea Sachs (Anne Hathaway) realized she was getting when she lands a job as the assistant to the prickly and demanding editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, Miranda Priestly.

Once again Meryl Streep shows us there is nothing she canʼt do because she is a total queen and we should worship her as such. Her character’s stern looks, impeccable style, unmoved stance on Sachs whenever she tries to impress her, and the fact that she can break anyone down without raising her voice or even changing her facial expressions because she is just that powerful makes her royalty enough to me, end of story. Hathaway then busts out her key move from The Princess Diaries and shows she can go from sales-bin to couture after getting a makeover from Stanley Tucci.

From this to....

From this to....

THIS.

The Andrea Sachs character is a great depiction of women taking charge and fighting for what they want even when someone like Miranda Priestly will try to break her down by insulting her fashion sense, calling her the smart fat girl and tearing her apart in the most calm of voices over the colour of two identical blue belts. We can all learn a little from Andrea Sachs.

(This scene. Perfection.)

At the same time, we could all have a bit more Miranda too; sheʼs strong, powerful, takes what she wants and does not apologize for it. If you combined these two powerhouses you would be able to control the world (and look incredibly fashionable while doing it). Devil Wears Prada is an inspiration: hard work does pay off in the end, if she wants it to, fashion can make a girl into the woman she wants to be, and in the end thereʼs always Paris and Paris is always a good choice.

Selling your soul for a pair of Jimmy Chooʼs doesnʼt sound all that bad now does it?
